is the theme of this year’s Open Monuments Day. During its 100-year history, the RTM built 164 stations, stops, and boarding places – ranging from the impressive station and headquarters on Rosestraat in Rotterdam to a small corrugated iron
shed used for loading and unloading parcels in Blaaksedijk. When the RTM ceased operations in 1978, many buildings were demolished or given a new purpose. Fortunately, the headquarters was preserved, still featuring its beautifully sculpted entrance with the inscription “STATION STOOMTRAMDIENST” above it.
On Open Monuments Day, the museum will display photos and original architectural drawings of several stations. Together, they provide a fascinating overview of architectural developments from 1878 to 1978.
